A visit to a local market for artisan cheese, a fresh baguette, charcuterie, and a bottle of wine sets the stage for a quintessential Parisian afternoon. The only remaining consideration is where to savor it.

Options abound: a meticulously landscaped garden in the shadow of a grand palace, a sprawling public park, or a quiet stretch along the Seine or one of the city's historic canals. When it comes to picnic settings, Paris is remarkably well-appointed.
